SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — A U.S. agency said Friday it will nominate the vast, federally protected wildlife refuge in the Okefenokee Swamp for listing as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Okefenokee refuge covers more than 90% of the swamp and is the largest national wildlife refuge east of the Mississippi River. Designation as a World Heritage site wouldn't impose any added restrictions or regulations for the Okefenokee. Ossoff said a World Heritage site designation would have both environmental and economic benefits for the Okefenokee and surrounding Georgia communities. Conservationists sounded doubtful that the World Heritage site nomination would directly affect the decisions of Georgia regulators.

Sept 17 (Reuters) - Gudaf Tsegay smashed the women's 5,000 metres world record and Armand Duplantis raised the bar again for the men's pole vault on Sunday, as the season-ending Eugene Diamond League meet concluded on a high. Shericka Jackson came off the turn with a massive lead to retain her women's 200 metres Diamond League championship title in 21.57, but came short of her goal to break Florence Griffith-Joyner's world record. The Jamaican Jackson won the 100 metres Diamond League championship a day earlier and finished more than half a second ahead of Ivorian Marie-Josee Ta Lou on Sunday, as Anthonique Strachan of the Bahamas took third in 22.16. The Canadian Arop finished five hundredths of a second slower and Algerian Djamel Sedjati took third in 1:43.06. Dutch World Champion Femke Bol collected her third Diamond League championship with a confident 51.98 performance in the 400 metres hurdles, as American Shamier Little took second in 53.45 and Jamaican Rushell Clayton finished third in 53.56.

CNN —Several athletes – including American star Noah Lyles – were caught up in a crash between two buggies at the World Athletics Championships, causing Jamaican sprinter Andrew Hudson to get glass in his eye. Footage of the incident ahead of the athletes’ 200-meter semifinal shows the buggies colliding at a junction outside the stadium in Budapest, Hungary. Hudson, the Jamaican champion over 200 meters, appeared to be in pain after the incident and later explained how shattered glass had got into his eye. Andrew Hudson and Noah Lyles race in the 200-meter semifinals at the world championships. Unfortunately, Andrew Hudson did seem to get some glass in his eye which was the hold-up.

Four days after winning the 100 metres, Lyles, twice world 200m champion, ran 19.76 seconds to record the fastest time in Thursday's semi-finals. Lyles' heat was delayed by 30 minutes after the golf cart transporting him and the other runners from the warmup track to the stadium crashed into another cart. American Kenny Bednarek, the Olympic silver medallist, ran 19.96 for the second fastest time, edging Letsile Tebogo of Botswana, the 100m silver medallist who crossed in 19.97. The 26-year-old Lyles is seeking to become the first man to win the sprint double since Usain Bolt in 2015. American Erriyon Knighton qualified fourth and Britain's 100 metres bronze medallist Zharnel Hughes, who beat John Regis's 30-year-old national record in the 200 this season, was fifth.

Lyles takes next step towards sprint double

The 26-year-old boldly predicted he would run 19.10 in the 200, which would break Usain Bolt's 2009 world record of 19.19, though that long shot would only conceivably come in Friday's final. Lyles was ill with Covid ahead of last month's U.S. trials. "I try to make all my races look as easy as possible, even if they aren't," said Lyles, who is seeking to become the first man to do the sprint double since Bolt in 2015. The 19-year-old Knighton has a personal best of 19.49 - second fastest in the field - and season's best of 19.72. "Noah Lyles will attack the world record, and maybe, if I push him hard, he could set it."

"Like I said it before, I had to be kicked out from another 100 metres race, so I had to do my best no matter what. I am really happy with my race, third place is a good start and the time is decent," she said. "I feel really good, today was challenging for all athletes but I'm still satisfied with my result," Chopra said. The Czech Republic's Jakub Vadlejch, who won silver in Tokyo, finished second again -- four centimetres shy of Chopra's mark. "It was an exciting race but a little bit windy, so I decided to not push too much and just focus on winning the race," Kipyegon said.
It's almost impossible to imagine a time when air travel was pleasant, much less enjoyable. Lost baggage, overbooked flights, outdated equipment, hidden fees, and disorganized staffing have fliers at their wits' end; consumer complaints about airline service have risen by 300% from pre-pandemic levels. Many of these measures had been put in place to improve safety following some rattling accidents in the early days of commercial air travel. So in 1978, at the urging of the economist and "inflation czar" Alfred Kahn, President Jimmy Carter enacted the Airline Deregulation Act. He added that "airline service, by any standard, has become unacceptable."
Brighton, who have not lost this year, were held to a 1-1 draw by Crystal Palace. An eight-point advantage in the table beckoned for Mikel Arteta's side but they never looked comfortable against an enterprising Brentford who should have been ahead by halftime. The visitors got their deserved point through Ivan Toney, who pounced in the 72nd minute to head in Christian Norgaard's cross. Only Harry Kane has netted more away goals in the Premier League this season than the Brentford striker. CNN —‘Tis the season for wall charts and fans gathering around to pick their starting teams for the 2022 Qatar World Cup. “It’s always difficult when a guy helps you get to the World Cup, he scores three goals in World Cup qualifying and isn’t going to be a part of the program. Again, it’s more about who we did add that we felt good about.”All but one of the 26 will be making their World Cup debut at this year’s tournament and, according to the USMNT, it will be the youngest team to qualify for the World Cup.
